Movies: Bollywood for Beginners

I am sure when you read the title of this article you thought, “Bollywood”? What is that, a typo? Or I am in brain fog? But do not worry, you read correctly. The Indian (aka Hindi) Film Industry is more commonly known as “Bollywood.” Many of the big film production companies are based in Mumbai, India, formerly known as Bombay, and the “B” was borrowed along with an homage to Hollywood, and we have Bollywood! It is the largest film industry in the world, producing over 800 films a year, with ticket sales in the billions. Bollywood productions are mostly romantic musicals, much like the old Hollywood classics, with absolutely beautiful costumes, photography and scenery. They have great stories, excellent performances, and the music and dance sequences are so wonderful to watch, but I am getting ahead of myself. I am totally in love with these films, as well as the music, so I thought I would give you an introduction into this wonderful world.

Movie Review: Becoming Jane

Before I start the review for Becoming Jane, let me just say that I adore Anne Hathaway in that all encompassing sort of adoration; I want to be her, date her, be her best friend, stylist, and work with her. However much I love her though, I got to be honest here. Becoming Jane was a good movie, and just that. Becoming Jane was a 2007 movie based on the life of the strong-minded writer Jane Austen.

Movie Review: Definitely, Maybe

I recently watched Definitely, Maybe, starring Ryan Reynolds (Van Wilder) and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine). While it was quite obviously a chick flick, the theater seemed to hold more men than women. Ironically, I did not hear any male complaints after it was over. The entire movie is a story between father and daughter. Reynolds is a recently divorced father with a young daughter curious about her father’s past. The entire movie is the daughter’s quest to figure out which, of three past girlfriends, is her mother. In the end, her prediction is correct, and the movie has a happy ending.

Movies to cuddle up with by yourself on Valentine's Day that won't make you feel lonely or cry (much).

I was sick of everyone telling me all these sweet and romantic movies to watch on Valentine's Day which only made me cranky and sad. Even though I'm currently in a relationship, it seemed as though the perfect man in those sappy love stories always made me second guess my guy and think he wasn't doing anything right. (It took me a long time to realize that the men in movies are actors and paid to do all the sweet things in the movie, as well as having all the sweet lines written for them.) Whether you're single this year, or your loved one is far away, these movies are surely going to make you smile during and after the movie! No sappy tears and doubt in this list, I promise!

Movie Review: Juno

I really wanted to love Juno. I wanted to be blown away and left startled and laughing in my seat. Not only are the reviews for Juno raving and wooshing across my television screen, but also my closest friends urged and begged me to see the movie. “It’s so you!” they claimed, spouting that I would adore the music and the movie was heartwarming and eye opening. So, I listened. Maybe it’s me, or maybe it’s the slow time of year, but I have to say, I was not impressed. The acting was weak, the plot lines were un-original, and the dialogue was hard to understand and weirdly paced. Juno may have been exciting to moviegoers because it’s a new “indie” movie with stimulating music, but thrilling and innovative it was not. Good reviews aside, I really, truly did have high hopes for Juno; it’s directed by Jason Reitman, son of famed director Ivan Reitman and full of some of my favorite comedic actors (who doesn’t love Allison Janey?). But, sometimes all we can do is hope, right?

Movie Review: I am Legend

I have been a big Will Smith fan since he was in the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" I think he's smart and funny. He's a pretty good actor too, so it doesn't hurt that he's also pretty cute! Whenever he comes out with a new movie, I am usually interested in going to see it, so I have seen most of his movies, except for Wild Wild West, which just didn't appeal to me.

Movie Review: The Bucket List

I was especially reluctant to see the new movie The Bucket List starring two of my all-time favorite actors Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman and favorite director, Rob Reiner. I mean, let’s go over the facts: it’s about two older men who are dying of cancer and want one last chance to see the world. For a girl who watched one grandfather pass away shaking from Parkinson’s and another survive lung cancer, I was not about to get excited to see two men share a hospital room on screen. However, my sister made me swear I wouldn’t see the movie Juno without her, and my friend promised Charlie Wilson’s War to his father, so I was stuck. I thought to myself, okay, I can get through this, think of Jack Nicholson in Something's Gotta Giveor Batman—not as a man dying of cancer. Armed with a giant Diet Coke and some mustered up courage, I sat in my seat waiting for the tears to begin. Funny thing was, they never started. Sure, the movie was sad: two dying men meet in a hospital room and only have six months to live; odds are they pass away. I was prepping myself for their death the whole movie, yet, when it came, it was sweet, not as heart breaking as I thought.

Review: Network Television Fall Season 2007

As colorful as a parade, another fall season has begun on network prime time television. Each attraction is designed to capture your attention for at least the next 24 weeks or so. And each network is hoping you'll be so pleased with its current offerings that you'll not tune in elsewhere. There are many new shows this year. I decided to test drive six of them.

Movie Review: "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"

I was fortunate enough to go to the theater recently and see "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". I attended with one friend who had read the Harry Potter books and another who hadn't read the books, but had seen the previous films. Caution: it is possible that those not familiar with the books may consider some of the material below to be spoilers.

Movie Review: Hot Fuzz (2007)

Sergeant Nicholas Angel is a London police officer with an arrest record 400% higher than any other officer. His superiors think he's making them look bad so they transfer him to Sandford, a boring, "crime-free" town. Once there, on his first night there, Angel notices something suspicious in the pub - teenagers drinking. He arrests most of the bar and a drunk trying to get in his car. The next day he finds out that one of the people he arrested, Danny Butterman, is also a police officer and son of Police Chief. Danny is a well-meaning but overeager huge action movie fan and believes Angel to be a real-life "bad boy," who gets in gunfights and car chases. A series of deaths occur and only Angel suspects murder. He uncovers the town secret and has to flee but he returns with an arsenal of weapons.

TV Review: Prime Time Network New Fall Shows

There were several new prime time network television programs debuting this fall and I decided to view as many as caught my interest- a little comparison shopping if you will. I don't have the ability to tape shows, so if two good ones aired at the same time, I had to choose one. Here are the programs I ended up watching: "Heroes", "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip", "Jericho", "30 Rock", "Twenty Good Years", "The Nine", "Six Degrees", "Men in Trees", "1 Versus 100", and "Brothers and Sisters". What follows is a mini-review of each.
