By Shobha S. Krishnan, M.D., Author of The HPV Vaccine Controversy
Over the past two years, the O-N-E L-E-S-S campaign for Gardasil, the new HPV vaccine to protect against cervical cancer, has brought discussion about the human papilloma virus to the forefront, shining new light not only on the vaccine itself, but also on the issues that surround it.

My "Waiting Bag"- Since I unfortunately spend alot of time in doctors' waiting rooms, I quickly learned to make the most of this seemingly wasted time.
Continue reading "What to Do When You Are Waiting to See The Doctor" »
Seeing the doctor is rarely what i would call fun. You are usually there because you don't feel well and you usually fall into the following categories: Having a diasnosis you thought you had walking into a door- and possibly seeing a new doctor for a 2nd opinion, or a treatment/ investigation of some new symtoms, or your usual treament isn't helping- and you are feeling worse.Being organized might be the best way to help yourself when seeing the doctor about your diagnosis or future treatment.
Nobody likes waiting, especially when you're not feeling well. Patients would rather be elsewhere, and contrary to popular belief, physicians do not like to keep patients waiting. Instead of spending time in the waiting room counting the minutes, you may be able to better use the time by preparing for the doctor visit.

August is "Good Night, Sleep Right" month at ButYouDontLookSick.com!
Modern research says that few people sleep well anymore, however good sleep is all important if you’re going to be healthy. The term, good sleep, means your body experiences all four complete sleep cycles: alpha, beta, delta, and theta and usually several cycles each. Furthermore, doctors advise us to get at least eight hours of this type of sleep per night. For various reasons many of us get much less than that and what we get may not be of good quality.

It is important for every patient to take an active role in their own healthcare. A personal health record is designed to grow as your needs grow or your health changes, and should be updated as often as needed. It is important to record how your health changes and mark your progress.
Take the first step!
Do not get overwhelmed! Take your time, and collect a little bit of information at a time. You will be surprised how it all adds up and you will feel much more organized and prepared when seeing your doctor. Also, once you have gathered and collected the necessary information, you’ll be surprised how easy it can be to organize it and print it out later.

Today about one in four American adults are living with a diagnosable mental disorder. However, the average American's understanding of mental illness is minimal at best and often the stigma surrounding individuals with mental illness is almost as harmful to them as their actual disease. To further complicate matters there is a large sector of the population that does not have a diagnosable mental disorder, but still needs some help from time to time dealing with the overwhelming stress of everyday life. While there is certainly no one solution to address these concerns, there is an option that most Americans fail to take advantage of: the phone hotline.

I have unfortunately been on both sides of this article. I have spent time visiting friends and family when they have been sick, but I have more often been the patient everyone is visiting. Many of the visits went very well, but unfortunately others didn’t go so well for them or me. Hopefully my mistakes or my tips from experience will help you.

We have all seen those microwave heating pads selling in the stores for big bucks, and I always thought "Boy I wish I knew how to make one" They look so easy to make. Last night, I saw a disturbing story on the news. A local realtor had been caught on videotape entering a client's home while the owners were away, so he could steal painkillers from their medicine cabinet! What's even worse is that this was the sixth house he had robbed. He has entered a treatment program for substance abuse and will likely lose his realtor's license. What the story didn't mention, though, is how the clients who were robbed were affected. Could something like this happen to you?

Ah, showering. That major task that, for those of us with a chronic illness, ranks right up there on the energy scale with oh, lawncare? Home renovation? Maybe car repairs? Why, I have to schedule personal hygeine days right along with doctor appointment days, grocery shopping days, and all those days which contain that one major endeavor, that spends all our "spoons" in one place.

I was diagnosed with SLE in my teens, long before I'd become sexually active. When sex became a part of my identity, instead of being a glorious whirlwind of sloppy kisses and knock-your-socks off orgasms, I viewed it as
yet another physical activity, I had to worry about! My bones popped so often, my husband and I joked that I had the ability to make love and make music at the same time. My toes and legs would stiffen from the uncontrollable muscle spasms; and forget about spontaneity, I could be exhausted one minute and achy the next.

A good thing to do when you become disabled is to make some survival ground rules for yourself. They can be anything that works for YOU. The only key is that they must be totally achievable at least 95% of the time, and very realistic.
