September is "Get Better, Get Well Gifts" month at ButYouDontLookSick.com! Let us help you find that perfect gift!
Sometimes the best way to cheer someone up, who is not feeling well, is to help them forget about their illness for a short while and think of something else. I like board games because for a good hour you are thinking of winning a game and you are able to get distracted from whatever cold, medical environment you are in to think about the game you are playing. A little friendly competition brings out the spirited “fighter” in anyone and a few laughs can’t hurt either. For those of you, who are bored with the usual board games, check out some of these games that we had never heard of before! They are fun and will be more unique then Monopoly or dominoes!

Sleep masks, ear plugs, fuzzy socks – there are tons of “sleep accessories” that I’ve used from time to time to establish better sleep habits. Sometimes it’s nice to change things up once in a while, and sometimes its takes a little something extra, like a good book, especially during or after a flare, to get back to a sleep routine that works.
Here are a few suggestions for helping you find a bed-time routine that works for you.

August is "Good Night, Sleep Right" month at ButYouDontLookSick.com!
One thing I have learned from my first year of parenting is that if the baby isn’t happy, no one is happy! The next thing I learned is that no one is happy if they don’t get sleep. This whole month we have been talking about the importance of sleep for adults, and especially those living with chronic illness. Sleep is equally important for the children in our lives. Children live happier, healthier lives when they get a good night’s rest (or a good nap). We have scoured the internet for children’s sleep products and have listed some of our favorites below. If you have children, or if you know someone with children, check our top ten new sleep products for kids.

I find that the hardest part of having people over is the set up and clean up. It takes a lot of energy and time, and let’s face facts- it is no fun! I want to be social and keep in touch with friends, but I do not want to pay for it the next day with exhaustion, pain and frustration and I do not want my house to be a total mess the next day. I have found a few items that have made some of my recent parties easier, and I am happy to pass them on to you! Although some of these items wouldn’t necessarily be items that you would buy all the time (either due to expenses, etc) I find that once in a while helpful items are so worth it!

I always knew about Barbara's Puffins cereal, and now since I am spending the month eating healthier, I thought it was time for me to try some of the other products made by Barbara's Bakery. In the month of May, as I tried to eat better, I learned an important lesson, and that is, I eat what I keep in the house. If I keep junk food in the house, I will snack on it. Even with the best of intentions, if it is there, eventually it will get eaten. Once I started stocking my pantry with better choices, I started eating better. Of course it always helps when the snacks and foods taste good, as well.

I am a picky eater at times, and I am always on the go. Eating healthy is hard but Luna Bars and Clif bars have made it easier. Now I have no excuses not to take better care of myself. I have tried numerous nutrition bars, meal replacement bars and granola snack bars, and I found them either not satisfying, not appetizing or they left a bad after-taste in my mouth. I love all jewelry, from bracelets, to earrings, necklaces and more. It is fun to express myself with colorful style and add a little something extra to any outfit. Unfortunately, most medical alert jewelry is not fun or fashionable. Usually it is something that I have to talk myself into wearing. I recently found stickyj.com and saw their wide selection of medical bracelets, medical id charms, medical necklaces, medical id watches, kids medical id bracelets and medical pendants, which all come in a wide variety of styles and metal types. The Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 is a very different style of computer keyboard. It is designed so your hands slope downwards toward the keys, not upwards as with a standard keyboard. The main keyboard is split into two, in order to encourage the use of both hands and a better typing style. The front of the keyboard is raised with an integrated wrist rest, so that you rest your wrists on the front of the keyboard and your hands naturally flop down onto the keys.

We all want to get the most out of our citrus fruits, which usually means squishing them until we’ve gotten every drop of juice. Some people recommend that you microwave your lemon for a few moments or roll it on the counter,
but when it comes right down to it, you still need an effective way to remove the juice. An electronic juicer would work fine, but they aren’t cost effective if you only squeeze the occasional lemon. A traditional reamer is generally efficient, but it’s not an easy tool to use for those with exhaustion or joint issues, and it doesn’t catch the seeds. As it turns out, the newest product on the market has proven to be the most functional and intelligent.

You know the slogan: “When You Care Enough To Send the Very Best.” Often times, when we are stretching our spoons out to the very limit, we feel that we aren’t always able to contribute our very best, even when in our hearts, we desperately desire to do so. For instance, when you hear great news, like I just did, about a friend getting engaged. You want to get a card out into the mail, but you’re not exactly sure how you’ll be able to extend yourself to get to the store right away amidst all of the other “must do’s” that require so much of your precious energy. I had another great shopping experience with our friends at OliveKids.com. Olive Kids designs kids bedding , kids lamps, borders, kids clocks, kids rugs, kids bedroom accessories and personalized kids products to help create a fun and creative room for kids. No TV characters, just fun, colorful kids bedding for boys and girls at a great price! I love that they do not cater only to the "mainstream cartoons" for bedroom decor. I feel like the way fads come and go... why not go with something that might last a bit more time, and that might encourage creativity and fun. I know from personal experience that it can be very costly to find quality items for a child's bedroom. So I think it is a smart financial choice to buy something with a theme they can grow with, rather then be stifled by the limitations of one character. They have some really cute design themes and some of my personal favorites are flowerland, tea party and Happily Ever for girls. Or how about out of this world, something fishy, or Dinosaur land for your boy's room.

I have just discovered my new favorite website- beside my own of course. It's called Chronique Couture and it was begun a year ago by a young woman named Kimberly who was diagnosed with MS. Like most young women, she was saddened by the lack of practical, yet fashionable "medical accessories." Anyone who has to deal with a chronic illness knows how much the little things in life can lift your spirits. This website features items to make your life easier, as well as put a smile on your face.
The website itself is fun to peruse, with bold and colorful backgrounds and a sassy and chic look. If you deserve a treat or you need a gift for someone who struggles with a chronic illness, this is a great place to shop.

Recently I realized I needed something for my neck. After over 8 years of suffering with painful Fibromyalgia, the worst part always was the way my neck would freeze up in pain on me. It was time for a trip to the drugstore. I stared down the long aisle of pain relievers and began the hunt for something that might really help. As I neared the new variety of stickypatches, I considered a heating kind, but sometimes the heat is just as bad. My eyes fell on a name I remembered as a child- Tiger Balm. I looked at it, considered it carefully, and in the end it was well worth a try. It was a long time name brand, so it might be worth it. I took it home and put one on that night when I felt the familiar freezing up, pain and soon-to-result headache!

Many of us fight fatigue inducing diseases and get tired very easily. I know I find myself looking all around for a chair, often at the most "difficult" times. When shopping in the mall, grocery shopping or even when an errand
itself involves walking far distances, I often find myself wishing I could just sit and rest for a few minutes.

Many people who face neurological disabilities, including the elderly and children, have trouble feeling when the temperature of water is too hot. Recently, I have (minimally) burnt myself, not realizing how hot the bath tub water was and so I was recommended to try an "anti-scald" device on my shower head/ faucet.

I found this product while searching the Internet on a great site called perpetual kid.com. I wasn't looking for something that would help my day to day living, but I found one. It serves as a lesson to always "keep your eye out" for items that can be useful and make life a little easier. You may need to get creative, or try to use products differently then they were intended, but if it works? Great.

I mentioned to my daughter that I found it hard to fall asleep and to relax after a very busy day commuting to the city and teaching four year olds. She asked me to try a guided meditation CD called Restful Sleep, Healing Sleep by Dr. Carol Robin. Previously, I've tried an alarm clock with the sounds of the ocean and I found that helpful, so I thought I would give this CD a try.

I have used heating pads of all shapes, sizes and quality. I consider myself a little "mini expert" on the topic of keeping warm. I use heating pads as a part of my daily routine for many reasons including; pain relief, relaxation,
and just plain keeping warm. I've even put a microwave in my bedroom to make it easier to use heating pads in the middle of the night, or right before bed.

The Gripmaster is a spring-loaded, hand-held strengthening device that effectively strengthens the fingers to the forearms. The squishy rubber balls, or "silly putty" type stuff that physical therapists give you, serve a similar purpose, but only the patented Gripmaster has movable pads to isolate each of your fingers.

Unfortunately, as I have gotten older, I have noticed more everyday aches and pains that I never seemed to have had before. I teach four year olds and after a busy day of bending and stretching in the classroom, I often come home with a sore back or neck. Recently, I discovered the afternoon treat of relaxing after work with a cup of tea and a warm heating pad. It is heaven and a perfect way to unwind.

I use heating pads almost every day. The have become a part of my nightly ritual before bed partly because I have sore muscles often and heat helps; but also because I tend to have bad circulation and I am frequently cold. It is not always convenient to use a popular type microwave heating pad especially when traveling, at work, or when doing errands outside. I found these heat treat warmers, and they are portable and easy!

I never thought I would use the word "beautiful" to describe a medical ID bracelet, but as soon as these arrived, I knew they were special! I didn't feel like I had to put these on; I wanted to!
These bracelets are very nice -- you would never know they were for medical purposes. I think back to times when I went to the hospital or was in car accidents, and I wished I was wearing an ID bracelet. It is so dangerous to go out without one, but medical bracelets were always known to be so ugly! I wish I had found this site years ago.
