This has been a hard winter for many of us "spoonies". Looking out at the gray dreary landscape, we have to use our imagination to see that Spring is just around the corner, even though it seems like an elusive dream right now! One way to relieve the lust for Spring and warm days is to bring fragrance and color into your home.

It is a new year, it is the perfect time to try out a new hobby!
Creativity in any form is a wonderful way to express your emotions. Sometimes when you are not feeling well, it is hard to talk, or express to your friends and family how you feel. But it is important to have an outlet for your feelings. Sometimes art projects are just the perfect fit. No words, no rules, just colors and expressions. I have found products that I liked because of their quality, ease of use, or the fact that they are specifically made for beginners or people with hand disabilities. I even tried some products that are “quicker” or smaller projects that are good for those with low energy. See below for my latest crafty picks!

If you’re at the end of your day (or your rope) and would like to escape the world, try a book!
You can travel to the other side of the world and look through scenic booklets of foreign attractions, read about other country’s cultures, or read about foreign explorations – all from your armchair.
You can read about wizards, fairies, dragons, and magic – and pretend you’re there, too! Hunt for treasures, seek a crown, and fight evil – without leaving home…

Many "Spoonies" acknowledge the benefits that fresh air, relaxation and being around nature can bring, but how many of us think that gardening is not for us, not with our conditions? However, this negative view is so wrong. Gardening as a Spoonie, requires re-evaluation of priorities and sometimes alot of sideways thinking, but it is very possible and can be so beneficial. And this time of year, as the winter starts to draw for a close, is the perfect time to decide to make this year the year you enjoy gardening as a Spoonie!

My journal was full of bits and pieces of me, not unlike the diary I kept as a teenager, but now there was a big difference. At 34, Rheumatoid Arthritis was ruling my life. My doctor told me to keep a record. “From one to
ten, write your pain level down everyday.” His suggestion proved to be a smart idea. By documenting my progress, we could see what combinations of medicines were working and find out if diet or my daily activities played a
role.

As one year ends, I find myself reflecting over it and the years before it. Where I went wrong, where I went right and the struggles that faced me everyday. Did I accomplish everything I had hope for?I realized it wouldn’t be a bad thing to make out lists for myself and thinking others may find this a worthwhile activity, thought to make a simple form people can copy over to a writing program and adjust spaces, print out, fill out and scrapbook into their respective pages or copy into an online diary.

I really enjoy scrapbooking. I think it is a new hobby, that creates a great memento for myself, or a perfect present for someone else. I started scrapbooking when I was stuck housebound, due to a recent hospital visit. I like that it is something I can do at my own pace, and I can be as elaborate or as simple, depending on my energy level. As excited as I am to work on most projects, there are days when I am just exhausted, and I don't even know where to start. I found this great product called "Layout Recipes," which are from Scrapbrats.com.

I found a few scrapbooking/ crafting magazines that are definitely worth signing up for, if you are interested in these types of hobbies. It was so exciting to get these in the mail and look for new projects, ideas and lessons. I find scrapbooking and paper crafts a great hobby for those with limited energy, due to illness. They are great projects to start and then come back to later, and also many of the project supplies can be inexpensive and make great gifts!

I have been stuck in the house with nothing to do while my body recuperates from being in the hospital. Friends had suggested I take up a hobby or a craft to pass the time and to feel a sense of accomplishment. I was not really in the mood to do anything "cheery," so when I first thought of scrapbooking or card making, I didn't think it "fit". Why would I want to document my life right now if I just left the hospital and still felt sick?
