Post Sports Medicine?
Okay, with my current activity level, sports medicine was the LAST specialty I would have thought I'd be seeing. However, when I went to my pcp this morning she recommended it, from an ortho standpoint without the Surgery, Surgery, Surgery that most orthos have. I'm supposed to be seeing him for my ankle only, but I'm going to make him look at my wrist. And miracle above miracles, they had an opening today.

My bloodwork isn't back yet, so still no news on whether or not I'll go to a rheumy.

Good luck with the appointment! Actually a sports guy was one of my best doctors in my childhood/adolescence.

My knee ortho was a sports guy too...although my doc is now recommending I see a physiatrist instead of my multitude of orthos...which sounds good to me.

My thumb doctor has been a sports doc (they work with our kind of injuries becasue the injuries we suffer from (i.e ligamentous injuries) because in the "normal" population these injuries happen more often in the sporting comunity) she cast me.

I am now to see an ortho, as she doesn't know what to do next.

Sports guy = awesome.

He was the most thorough, down to earth, adorable doctor ever.

Not too mention smart! He actually listened. Spent an HOUR AND HALF in the exam room with me. He examined both my feet, my left foot twice and my wrist twice.

The verdict is that my ankles are not more loose than normal people's ankles, nor is my wrist. There's probably a better way to word that, but I took vicodin. He thinks I have problems with ankle stability (which doesn't really make sense) exacerbated by problems with proprioception (he explained its a balance issue where my ankles don't know where there are in the space time continuum, and since they are the first weight bearing joint, they like to sprain and buckle and stuff) so where I stand is this:

-Physical therapy for both feet. Oh, so much fun.
-Keep wearing frankenboot and using the cane.
-He's asking for a definate referal to a rheumy from my pcp, as his first impression was "systemic" and "autoimmune" Says my ankles are tender over both the tendons, ligaments, and joints. And to remember that rheumatological diseases are not black and white like appendicitis is.
-He's sending me for stress view xrays of my ankles, which I've never heard of. Something about it lets him see in the joint spaces better.

He thinks I might be developing Dequervane's tendosynovitis in my thumb, if not there's something wrong with the joint where my thumb meets my hand, and where my hand meets my wrist, so I get the world's ugliest wrist/thumb splint to rest those joints. Fortunately I don't have to wear it all the time. Just of course, the more I wear it, the more it will rest.

Proprioception issues are a part of EDS...

Due to the joints being so mobile etc our prorioception receptors are damaged and we lose the ability to know where we are in space (I tend to miss judge door ways (smacking my self into them), if you stand still and shut your eyes, you think you are still and others will tell you you are moving about all oer the place.

I know you don't have an EDS diagnosis. But this could be realted to your joint laxity (although how can he say you don't have loose joints but have instability (loose liagments - some docs call Hypermobility - Generalised Ligamentous Laxity).

DiDn't one of your other doc's say your were hypermobile???

Quote:
Proprioception is permanently impaired in patients who suffer from joint hypermobility or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (a genetic condition that results in weak connective tissue throughout the body).

I am glad for you that the Sports Doc was so helpful.

Thank you for all the information. Geez. This is getting weird. I'm going to have to just say to one of my doctors "I've researched it, and I really think I fit the profile of EDS. Should I go to a genetecist?" That's what I said to my cardio about POTS: "I researched it, and I was wondering, do you think I have autonomic dysfunction?" he said yes, so I said "Do you think I should go to a neurologist," and so far, its been one of the best things that's happened to me. Now, I've got a whole new crop of doctors who take me seriously and are trying as hard as they can to make me better.

I'm starting PT next week, maybe I'll ask the physical therapist what they think. Or I might wait til I get referred to a rheumy, if I get referred to a rheumy. Then I'll say to the rheumy, I've done research, and I think its seronegative RA vs. EDS vs. fibro, or all of the above, with a dash of dysautonomia mixed in.

That was the only complaint I had about the sports med guy. He said my joints aren't loose but that I have ligament and tendon laxity issues. That was quite confusing. I meant to ask him more about it, but he already had spent an hour and half with me, so I figured I'd just ask the PT people what he meant.

I have parts of me that are stable even though the ligaments are loose...ie my left hand :(

I'm glad your doc was so cool...man now I know I need to go to Physiatry...

and yeah I have a major issue with balance and space...take my EDS, vision impairment and chronic vertigo and you have...well...a mess :)

I was just really confused, because the podiatrist said that I definately sublux my ankles, but this guy said they aren't loose? Huh? English please.

I wonder if this proprioception thing can transfer to other parts of the body, as I am a HUGE kltuz. If its in my path, I will trip on it or walk into it. Not good when it comes to doors and pillars and things. Not to mention that I dislocate my toes on a regular basis when I stub them on everything from the living room table to the door jam. And I drop everything.

And I have no depth perception. I have trouble driving and riding a bike because of it. Mix that with my POTS near syncope... Its no wonder I have bruises that I have no idea where they came from.

Proprioception issues effect ALL of your body (your arms (miss judging distance etc and banging your shoulder/ arms on door ways etc)).

Explains alot. I'm always saying, "That door came out of nowhere!" "The tree attacked me!" "I swear the floor is trying to kill me!"
