Get better sleep with these essential "Sleep Accessories"

August is "Good Night, Sleep Right" month at ButYouDontLookSick.com! Sleep Accessories Edition

Sleep masks, ear plugs, fuzzy socks – there are tons of “sleep accessories” that I’ve used from time to time to establish better sleep habits. Sometimes it’s nice to change things up once in a while, and sometimes its takes a little something extra, like a good book, especially during or after a flare, to get back to a sleep routine that works.

Here are a few suggestions for helping you find a bed-time routine that works for you.

Blankets, Pillows, and Bedding, Oh My!

August is "Good Night, Sleep Right" month at ButYouDontLookSick.com! Bedding Edition

Don’t you just love a cozy blanket? No wonder why so many babies and kid’s love their “blankies”. As adults I think we could all use to have something warm, and soft to cuddle with at night. A blanket can be very soothing and can really help you sleep and nap better. One sleep necessity that tops the list along with a great blanket is a quality, comfortable, or even therapeutic pillow.

We’ve tried out a few of each, and put together this list of our favorites - all designed to help you get the most out of your invaluable sleep and nap time.

My Favorite Ways to Entertain a Child, Sick or Well!

One of the best things to do when your wee one is sick is take some time with them and read to them. You can hold them in your lap while you do, so they can see the illustrations, too. Or, if they aren’t well enough for that, sit close to them, maybe hold their hand, and act like storytellers do – turn the book sideways so the child can follow along with you.

Product Review: Black and Decker SmartDriver Compact Screwdriver

I’m an interior decorator at heart – I love to design and decorate a room. My husband is a huge help – I make the plans, he executes – to a certain extent. Usually, I’m the one that puts the holes in the walls. That entails one of two things: “Hon? Where is your drill? Why? Because I need to put holes in the wall!” Then he reluctantly hands his precious drill over to me and asks me if I know how to use it, what drill bit to use and how to use it for screws…

Good Night, Sleep Right: Kid’s Edition

August is "Good Night, Sleep Right" month at ButYouDontLookSick.com!

One thing I have learned from my first year of parenting is that if the baby isn’t happy, no one is happy! The next thing I learned is that no one is happy if they don’t get sleep. This whole month we have been talking about the importance of sleep for adults, and especially those living with chronic illness. Sleep is equally important for the children in our lives. Children live happier, healthier lives when they get a good night’s rest (or a good nap). We have scoured the internet for children’s sleep products and have listed some of our favorites below. If you have children, or if you know someone with children, check our top ten new sleep products for kids.

Book Review: Sharon Osbourne Extreme: The Autobiography

Sharon Osbourne is a larger than life character whose family achieved near global recognition through the reality show 'The Osbournes'. Sharon is best known to some people as a judge on TV shows such as, America's Got Talent, X factor, and as the wife of ex-Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne, but she was also the daughter of music manager Don Arden, Sharon was mixing with music stars and leading a fascinating, roller coaster life before she even met Ozzy.

Book Review: Migraine Expressions

I wrote an essay, for a collection of essays, artwork and poetry, called 'Migraine Expressions', compiled and edited by Betsy Blondin. This collection was designed to have those with migraines share their experiences through various artistic means. I believe that it succeeds brilliantly and in a way it bridges that gap of personal experiences and the subjectivity of pain. Pain is not a shared experience by nature, yet I saw myself reflected so many times in these expressions. My frustrations, pain, emotions and triumphs were mirrored by others. I like that others know my experience, have lived it and are surviving it.

Easy Recipe: Dill Pasta Recipe

Fresh dill is better than dried for this recipe. So I don't waste fresh herbs, when I get them home from the store I wash them and, while the plants are still wet, I stick them in a freezer bag & pop them in the freezer. I take it out and cut it as needed. If you have lots of spoons you can chop the herbs up and put them in an ice cube tray with some water & stick it in the freezer. Then later on if you are making soup, for example, you can just take out a fresh herb ice cube and throw it in the pot.

In the News: CVS has now made it even easier to Donate to Charity

The Easter Seals donation card, available now at all 6,300 CVS/pharmacy stores in 44 states, is the first and only donation card available in retail stores. The Easter Seals card has been out on the market for about six weeks now, and is stocked alongside gift cards for places such as The Home Depot, iTunes, and Barnes & Noble. The card provides a very convenient way to give to charity – whether directly or on behalf of someone else via a gift in their name – and 100% of the proceeds goes straight to Easter Seals. Donation cards come in $5 and $25 amounts – and are great for slipping into get well cards. (They say that charity helps the giver to feel better, so here’s a way to help the get-well-gift recipient feel better, while also helping children with disabilities to get better too!) Through the sale of these cards, CVS further demonstrates the company’s long-standing commitment to its partnership with Easter Seals and the support of children with disabilities.

Customers can also register their donation card at www.charitycardmall.com and input the name of the person who is being honored by the donation. An email message is then generated and sent to that person saying a donation has been made to Easter Seals in his/her name.

How Sleep Helps Your Body Survive and Heal

August is "Good Night, Sleep Right" month at ButYouDontLookSick.com!

Modern research says that few people sleep well anymore, however good sleep is all important if you’re going to be healthy. The term, good sleep, means your body experiences all four complete sleep cycles: alpha, beta, delta, and theta and usually several cycles each. Furthermore, doctors advise us to get at least eight hours of this type of sleep per night. For various reasons many of us get much less than that and what we get may not be of good quality.
