Book Review- Diseases and Disorders- Lupus

I work part time in a public library and recently a new book came across my desk that I was thrilled to see. It is a children's book on Lupus geared for ages 10 and up. The book is user friendly, easy to read, but far from simplistic and broken down into five chapters. The chapters are delve into 5 basic questions- What is Lupus?, What causes Lupus?, How is Lupus Treated?, How to Live with Lupus? and What is the Future for Lupus? There are also photographs, drawings and charts, which simplify this sometimes confusing and overwhelming subject.

When my daughter Christine first became ill at age 15, there were not that many good books on medical subjects. Almost all books which covered any type of disease were written for the adult reader. This book gives an overview of the subject that a young adult as well as an adult would find interesting and manageable.

The book, published in 2008, also contains a glossary of terms, organizations to contact, as well as additional books and internet sources. I would recommend this book for anyone doing research on the subject as well as any young person who has been diagnosed with Lupus. Sometimes we fear giving young children too much information, but when a child or teenager has a disease it is important to arm them with knowledge, which will hopefully empower them to take control over their bodies and eventually their lives.
