Book Review: Everyone's Guide to Cancer Survivorship: A Road Map For Better Health

Authors: R.N., Holly Gautier, M.D., Ernest H. Rosenbaum

Right away this book's title caught my eye. The idea of a book being written from the positive point of view of "survivorship" is wonderful but unfortunately rare. Patients and loved ones want answers on not only how to get better, but what to do once they do get better.

It is sad to say but everyone I know has been effected by cancer in some way. If your life hasn't been immediately touched, then someone you know has had to deal with this disease. The goal to getting proper treatments and being a self advocate is to get as much information as possible and make informed choices about your care. This book is for both the patient, but also for the supporter.

Respected oncologist Dr. Ernest Rosenbaum leads a team of 34 oncology specialists and medical contributors-some of whom are both doctors and survivors themselves-in creating a guide specifically geared for cancer survivorship. This book is written for patients to actually read, not dumbed down, yet not too scientific and technical. Many times medical books end up being bought with good intentions, but then sit on patient's shelves. I
believe this book will be read and used. This is the type of book that you reference, make notes and highlight. The information is current, helpful and practical.

I also think this book will serve as a great catalyst for conversation among families, patients and doctors. There are many topics beyond the typical medical like; including guidelines for future health screenings, prevention therapies and coping with the psychological side effects of cancer.
