Book Review: Near Mama's Heart
Breastfeeding is an extremely intimate subject and to breast feed or not, is a very personal decision. Mothers who do choose to nurse their babies are usually passionate about their choice, but without a strong support group that decision is made even harder. Near Mama's Heart, gives a face and a voice, to those who choose to breastfeed.
The photos show happy babies and young toddlers nursing and moms of all kinds, seemingly enjoying the process. The pictures capture the sense of intimacy, warmth and tenderness involved in breastfeeding. The rhyming text is playful, but strong in getting the message across. "Near Mama's heart right where I belong, Her milk makes me happy, healthy and strong." "Near Mama's heart and at Mama's breast, I feel loved, I feel special, and I feel blessed."
This book is a wonderful gift for any mother who has chosen to breastfeed, but its strong wordage- "Breastfeeding is best for every baby." would be upsetting to the mother who, for her own reasons has chosen not to.
This book is also an excellent one to read to the young child ages 2 to 3, who is still or at one time was breastfed.
